These posts from the old races have really struck a chord so here is a small collection of newspaper cuttings of people, incidents and more from the 1971 Cape to Rio race.

‘Cariad’, the grand old lady of the sea, took a pounding on her passage from Durban to Cape Town, breaking a mast and even losing a crewman overboard.

Ricus van de Stadt “conceived” 13 of the yachts in the race on his drawing board, among them some impressive names.

‘Albatros’ was delayed at Robben Island after the start as she “sprung” her mast. After innovative repairs she went on to win the race in convincing style.

To this Cape Town Dentist and his wife and two children, the Cape to Rio yacht race is a family affair. That is of course the Warr family.

‘Pioneer’, one of the smallest in the race, was struck by a whale and sunk in minutes at night. Fortunately the crew were spotted in the liferaft within hours of the sinking.

‘Albatros’ had three of the six crew with the name John!

At 71 years old, Peter Strong took ‘Wayfarer’ to a respectable Rio finish despite several last-minute delays including a slow passage from Durban to the start. He showed guts and determination.
