There were three key people in the initial project to build a boat for the 1985/86 Whitbread Round the World Race.
The major figure was Peter “Padda” Kuttel as financier and skipper of the boat. Project Manager was Ludde Ingvall, the person who finally convinced him into the project of building a new state-of-the-art boat rather than chartering one. The third was Eric Bongers as the builder.
The boat was a Bruce Farr design due to his success in the previous race with ‘Ceramco New Zealand’ which was skippered by Peter Blake. Three other designers were approached, include South Africa’s own Angelo Lavranos who came within a hair’s breath of being commissioned.
This feature takes one right through every aspect of the project from conception to launching. It’s comprehensive and interesting – and a worthy read.
