The Springbok Transatlantic Race (STAR) committee who conceived ‘Voortrekker’s’ entry in the 1968 Transatlantic Race were a very thorough group who left absolutely nothing to chance in order to give the skipper of the boat the best possible chance, and have no regrets.
This also extended to the selection committee who had the unenviable task of selecting “our man”. Each applicant had to have completed a minimum of a 500 nautical mile singlehanded passage.
They publically called for applications, and after receiving nine, chose Bruce Dalling, whom they felt fitted the criteria for success best.
“He must have the qualifications of a Chichester – supreme physical fitness; the mental stamina to live with himself for two months; superb navigational qualities and the ability to sail the yacht to its maximum regardless of the weather” said Gordon Graham, chairman of the selection Committee.
Today’s newspaper cutting gives details on all the applicants.
