We kick off today with a newspaper cutting from 1986 when John Martin and Bertie Reed were competing in the BOC race, and conclude with some Lipton news.

“Drama At the BOC Start”.
THE BOC Round the World singlehanded yacht race started dramatically at Newport Rhode Island at 3pm yesterday.
South African Bertie Reed in ‘Stabilo Boss’ was first across the start line, but made a tacking error to let John Martin, in ‘Tuna Marie Voortrekker II’ through, in a wind of between 15 to 20 knots. Shortly afterwards a spectator craft collided with ‘Tuna Marine’… .

“An Introduction to Yachting”.
Boksburg’s Cinderella Dam will host the East Rand Yacht Club’s open day between 10am and 4pm on Saturday.
It’s always good to see clubs open their doors to newcomers as our sport is in dire need of new blood, especially young blood.

A SADF crewed 10 metre yacht is the talking point in Mauritius after taking only 14 days to reach the island in huge seas and gale force winds.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club’s ‘MBS Challenger’ has to put up with invasions from bunnies as well as from several other strong boats in the Table Bay races this week.

“Magnificent Seven All Set”.
Seven previous Lipton Challenge Cup champion skippers, on today’s starting line in Table Bay, are keen for renewed glory.
