“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Nerve-shattering Finish & West Coast Cruise

by Richard Crockett

The last few “nerve-shattering” days in the fight to the second-leg finish of the Whitbread Round-the-World Race, between the sister maxis ‘Atlantic Privateer’ and ‘NZI Enterprise’, were graphically recounted by Springbok yachtsman John Martin to Roger Williams of the Cape Times.

This is a great read about the “slugfest” in which Padda Kuttel and his ‘Atlantic Privateer’ took line honours into Auckland.

The 1985 West Coast Cruise attracted 50 boats, with 12 additional boats being unable to compete as the Langebaan Yacht Club could not cope with more than 50.
