“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. More J22 Worlds on Table Bay

Ian Ainslie, Rick Mayhew and Gary Sindler show a clean transom to the fleet and being convincing winners overall.

I do marvel at what my archives reveal from time to time. Today, staying with the 1997 J22 Worlds on Table Bay, SA Yachting magazine reveals that this was the very first keelboat World champs ever held in South Africa! Who knew that?

The editorial reveals that the starts showed a lack of experience sailing in large fleets in South Africa. With dwindling numbers over several years now, there is merit for potential Lipton competitors to put in some real time and effort into practising those as the fleet in August may be quite large.

Again, with the Lipton Cup challenge being at sea, potential competitors may well do themselves proud by basing their campaigns at a coastal venue to maximise their time sailing at sea, which is very different to sailing on flat water.

A bonus in today’s report comes with full results for the 1997 Worlds. This alone makes for interesting reading – and a who’s who of sailing 28 years ago.

Finally, has anyone heeded the advice from yesterday to begin their campaigns NOW?
