It’s time for me to take a break as the year has been long, hard and very busy, especially in my archives which keep revealing many fine aspects of sailing history.
So it’s time to wish you, one ‘n all, a wonderful festive season and a new year that brings all your wishes to reality.
This is also a good opportunity to share with you a poem written by the Spearhead Class scribe in their December 1972 newsletter. It starts like this:
Afore the news for end of year,
May we wish you all good Christmas cheer!
May ’73 be full of glee,
and may we all go down in boats to the sea!
May the wind there blow, may the tide there flow,
because all we have on the Highveld is “snow”!
One will have to follow this link to read it in full: Spearhead Class News – SA Yachting
I am certain that some of the much older “old salts” may recognise the names mentioned in the poem – if so, please share your thoughts and recollections of them and the class.
In closing I must make a final appeal for the year to all out there who may be using the time to do some clearing out in preparation for the new year ahead. If you come across ANY sailing related material, be it scrap books, photos, negatives and slides, and even old sailing trophies, please contact me (editor@sailing.co.za) as there may well be material worth archiving for the future.
I have had many wonderful people send me material over the years, and this I appreciate greatly as my archives are becoming a very real treasure trove of sailing history in this country.
I will gladly scan, digitise and archive all material and return the originals, and also include the digitised files.
Sadly, and too regularly, our sailing history is ending up in trash cans. So please contact me (editor@sailing.co.za) if you have anything to share with me.
I’ll be back in the new year sharing our sailing history from my archives.
