“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Martin Closes Gap on Leaders

by Richard Crockett

Back in the 1990s John Martin and Bertie Reed “ruled the waves” so to speak as they were either churning up the nautical miles on the oceans of the world, or were in high demand from the many journalists who wanted first-hand knowledge of their nautical exploits – and more!

Newspapers and magazines, virtually daily, carried something about these two, even if it was just a few lines.

Today, 35 years ago now, John Martin was having a ding-dong battle in the Atlantic with Philippe Jeantot, while Bertie Reed had a tough night in tropical squalls.

Henri du Plessis reported as follows: “John Martin and Philippe Jeantot have closed the gap on leader Alain Gautier as the leaders approach the doldrums at the equator on day 17 of the round-the-world BOC Challenge.

“As Martin, in ‘Allied Bank’, and Jeantot (‘Credit Agricole IV’), drew closer to Gautier in ‘Generali Concorde’, Bertie Reed in ‘Grinaker’ dropped back to 11th place after a rough night in tropical squalls.”
