“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Lipton Cup From Yesteryear

Way back in 1989 ‘Judron, sailing for the Hout Bay Yacht Club, was on the cusp of having the Lipton Cup by the throat, winning a 3-way battle in the third race.

A year later in 1990, a Cape Times headline shouted: “Hudson’s Fightback”. Dave Hudson, sailing Port Owen Challenger, redeemed his poor 24th place on Tuesday by convincingly stamping his authority on the fourth round of the Joko Lipton Challenge Cup yesterday – leading the race virtually the whole way and crossing the line first.

In 1993 a headline said: Outsider Takes Yachting Honours: – that’s when Hermanus Yacht Club won the first race of the event.

“Natalians Conspicuous by Lipton Cup Absence”. “The Durban burgees are flying at half-mast following the shock revelation that neither Point Yacht nor Royal Natal Yacht Club have managed to muster the effort to defend their pride or honour to wrest the Joko Lipton Cup back to Natal”.
