“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Jakaranda’s Fastnet Race

by Richard Crockett

Last week I shared news on the South African Admiral’s Cup team, and today news on the Fastnet Race popped up in my search through newspaper cuttings on this day in 1971.

The big news of the day was that ‘Jakaranda’ rounded the Fastnet Rock in 2nd place of the Admiral’s Cup competitors, with the Australian yacht ‘Ragamuffin’ an hour ahead of the South African’s.

On handicap ‘Jakaranda’ ended up 6th overall, a result Bruce Dalling was not at all happy with, and blamed himself for the blunder. That story can be read in “Dalling: My R1000 Blunder”.

There are three news stories on the Fastnet Race as follows:

“Admiral’s Cup: Geen Nuus Van 20 Jagte”:  1971 08 10 – Thirsty Bertie – 000041

“Jakaranda 2nd Round Fastnet in Big Yacht Race”:  1971 08 10 – Thirsty Bertie – 000039_Redacted

“Dalling: My R1000 Blunder” + “Jakaranda Sixth in Fastnet Race”:  1971 08 10 – Thirsty Bertie – 000046_Redacted
