“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. “Hooked on the Horn”

JJ Provoyeur.

By Richard Crockett

JJ Provoyeur has always been a larger than life figure in our local sport and industry, and became a household name when he decided to race around the world singlehanded in 1994/95.

Maybe, just maybe, this singlehanded quest was all part of his plan to round Cape Horn single-handed, a thought that had been in his mind for a long time. Why?

This extract may answer that question. “It was an emotional experience. I felt as if I were the first person ever to have gone round the Horn!”

That’s good enough me.

Yet despite the feeling of “being first”, JJ took things quite nonchalantly as can be gleaned from this extract: “When we were abeam of the Cape I cracked a beer, toasted the Horn, my good fortune and life. Then I had to sail 10 miles further to clear dangers before hardening up to make for the strait of Le Maire.”

JJ Provoyeur’s steed for his circumnavigation was ‘Novell’ which was formerly ‘Grinaker’.
