In recent weeks I have posted newspaper reports on the “heady” days of John Martin and Bertie racing around the world singlehanded. They were good days indeed as not only did these two fly our flag high wherever they went, but the news media back home lapped up their every word. As a result the media took a like to our sport and went the extra mile to give the sport as a whole additional coverage.
It was today, exactly 37 years ago, that the Cape Argus report that John Martin had won the first leg of the BOC Challenge in to Cape Town. He was of course aboard ‘Tuna Marine Voortrekker II’.
More importantly he broke the record for this leg by almost five days.
