“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Grog Started As A Name Not A Gurgle

By Richard Crockett

And here I was thinking that I knew a lot about rum! It turns out that I don’t as did you know that GROG was an admiral before it was a drink!

Today grog is the time-honoured name of the stimulating rum and water mixture rationed once each day to the sailors of every ship and station of the British Navy.

Well that’s not quite right either as the daily rum ration was killed off in 1970 – hence we celebrate Black Tot day on the 31st July every year in protest of this poor error in judgement by the British Navy.

I specially like the rum ration routine issue, as explained in this delightful article from SA Yachting in 1960, and trust that all those rum quaffers who follow this Blog enjoy it too – along with their daily ration!
