“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Flags – Etiquette and Custom

By Richard Crockett

Last week I shared an extract on Flag Etiquette written in 1932. Obviously the correct use of nautical flags was still an issue in 1938 as the subject was again re-visited in Yachting Monthly magazine.

I specifically enjoyed the sub-head which read:

“Flags should be worn correctly this season” – Fashion Editor! Who would have thought that a sailing mag, even then, had a “Fashion Editor”?

The author opened this editorial with the following words: “It has been said that the smartness of a ship may be accurately judged by the smartness of her boats. This is largely true, but an almost equally reliable pointer lies in the manner in which her flags are worn and in the smartness with which colours are made in the morning and hauled down at sunset.”

It’s another interesting and worthwhile read on flags and flag etiquette.
