“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Finn Week Sails Into Yachting Calendar

I am very well aware that the Finn Class is staging its nationals soon, thanks to the active Whatsapp group, so hopefully this will be a fillip to all “Finnites” to dust of their boats and compete after reading this report from the 1961 January/February issue of SA Yachting magazine.

“A Finn regatta can now be regarded as an established fixture on the South African yachting calendar. Finn owners who attended the Glinane Finn Trophy week in Durban during the Christmas holidays unanimously voted that the trophy should again be contested in Durban next Christmas, after which plan for future venue will be decided.

“The event has yet to get the blessing of S.A.Y.R.A.- but no doubt the .. “old lady” will be persuaded to shake out a reef and recognise that the wind is fair for individual class boat regattas . Certainly a total of 31 entries (at fairly short notice) and a highly successful week of sailing is proof of a demand for the concentrated competition that such regatta can give. Particularly for an Olympic class boat, it is the best possible stimulant for better helmsmanship.

The Glinane Trophy began as an idea among Durban owners, fertilised by Transvaal enthusiasm transmitted through Bobby Nuttall, the former Transvaal champion, who is now resident in Durban.”

My question is simply this: “Where is the Glinane Finn Trophy today?”
