“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Erna’s Passage to the Sea

Erna on her way through the main street of East London and being launched.

by Richard Crockett

I came across the opening photo a few days ago and was so intrigued about it that I dug deeper to see what else I could unearth – and I found a delightful story.

One of many ex-merchant seamen who found themselves stranded in civilian life, Karl Broschk was high and dry on the Rand . He decided to build a boat-and has just finished the biggest ever constructed in Johannesburg. This is an account of how he did it and got it to the sea.

The picture of the boat trundling down the main street of East London is the only image I have so far come across, except of course for the additional images and report in the May/JUNE 1958 issue of SA Yachting.

Officialdom took its toll and instead of launching in Durban, the nearest port, he had to travel a circuitous route to East London.
