There was such varied news in this section that I felt it appropriate to share these page from the January/February issue of SA Yachting magazine from 1960.
“The growing Union-wide interest in boating was clearly reflected in the growth of Durban’s four yacht clubs last year.
“At the beginning of the season the Point Yacht Club reported more than 1,100 members, 900 senior and 200 juniors – an increase of 400 ; the Bluff Yacht Club had more than 500; and the Island Sailing Club, entering on its second season, more than 100. It is difficult to estimate the sailing membership of the Royal Natal Yacht Club, which is now predominantly a social club. Its sailing section, however, is extremely active; and they have added to their strength by founding a Natal University Section, numbering about 50.
“The P.Y.C. and R.N.Y.C. have always co-operated closely, holding their races – open to members of both club on alternate week-ends. This year, however, the P.Y.C. is using its own starting line, controlled from a judge’s bridge built on top of the clubhouse.
“A problem for these two clubs has been congestion on the single (municipal) slipway at the Yacht Basin. More than 3,000 small craft of all types use Durban Bay – and perhaps a third of them enter the water at the Yacht Basin.”
