“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Dabchick 60th Anniversary

A Dabchick churning it up!  pic supplied by Brian Hallock

Well that 60th anniversary was in 2016, so the Dabbie is rapidly heading towards its 70th anniversary, and a class worthy of having this 7-page feature shared today.

And not wanting to wax lyrical about this magnificent boat, on which I learnt to sail, I will simply share what I wrote at the time, which went like this:

“When I first became aware of the Dabchick Class 60th anniversary, my interest was of course piqued as I learnt to sail on a Dabchick way back in 1968 when the class rules dictated that it was a two-person boat. It’s a boat I have a particular fondness for, and have often lamented the fact that the class took the decision to turn it into a singlehanded boat.

“My reasoning for being against the singlehanded rule is that EVERY time a Dabbie was on the water there were TWO people enjoying the sport. I also firmly believe that two kids on a boat will have a day’s fun, while one alone will become bored quickly and come ashore soon after launching!”

I have many an old Dabbie photo in my archives so I am willing to dig deep and find the hidden memories for those who remember their “Dabbie Days” with fondness. The names of skipper and crew (where appropriate) plus sail number would assist as many have no identification or caption. But, as this is very time-consuming there will be a small fee for doing this. Email – editor@sailing.co.za if you are interested.
