“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Club Notes

by Richard Crockett

Although today’s feature is headed “Club Notes” I have specifically chosen it due to the interesting information it contains on the 1962 Nationals, which were to be held in Knysna, including “Tidal Tips”.

There is also information from the Klerksdorp Yacht Club, Flamingo Yacht Club, and the Free State champs. A bonus read is a feature entitled “Some Doings with A Dinghy”.

The information on Knysna was introduced as follows: “The 1962 SAYRA National Regatta will be staged on one of the finest spots on the whole African coast for small craft, the Knysna Lagoon in the heart of the famous Garden Route. Here you get that rarity along our seaboard – calm water sheltered by a lovely countryside, leading out to the sea through that grand bit of scenery, The Heads, shown above.

“The S.A.Y.R.A. National Regatta to be held in Knysna from January 27 to February 11 1962, is virtually being run as two separate Regatta by the Knysna Yacht Club.

“This arrangement is an experiment in coping with the increasing number of yachts that are taking part in the National. Many of the smaller centre will be excluded from taking their turn in presenting the Regatta if numbers go on increasing, therefore a fortnight’s Regatta, run in two parts, may be the answer.”
