In my long association with our sport and Durban, it’s interesting looking back to March 1991 when massive marina proposals were unveiled for Durban, and to read what was proposed while also reflecting on why hugely expensive proposals are presented at great cost and then shelved?
I have newspaper cutting going back to the 1960’s where the City Council were talking about revamping Durban’s Marina, yet to this day very little has been done. Talk and expensive proposals obviously mean absolutely nothing – but line peoples pockets.
In 1991 the Victoria Embankment Waterfront project had a proposed value of R450-million. It was described as the “most ambitious and exciting development ever proposed for Durban”.
Yet today, Durban’s yacht basin still has stormwater drains filling the harbour with filth and sewerage! And the infamous “Lavender Creek” alongside the Point Yacht Club more often than not smells really awful.
