
It also shows some of the essential parts of the ketch, including the gooseneck coupling between the boom and the mainmast – enlarged, inset -in which something apparently broke when Dalling was struggling to reef the mainsail on Monday.

After mainsail and boom problem yesterday, and many messages of support, Dalling has continued on regardless. Whether this was because of a message he received from the Voortrekker project committee or not, the message said “Bad luck, but carry on regardless – now good luck to you”.
After studying the latest reports from Dalling as he headed westward in Voortrekker in the single-handed trans-atlantic race, Mr, Lello commented: “The whole picture has changed from the rather unclear one we had earlier in the day.
“As I see it, the main winch did not seize. What had seized was the roller reefing on the gooseneck which couples the boom to the mainmast. (See inset sketch, in the diagrammatic drawing of Voortrekker).
Dalling was a tough and determined man who would not let anyone down – especially all the South Africans who followed and supported him. So he was carrying on regardless…
