“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Cariad is on the Move

Today is a mixed bag which includes a report on Cariad, and some “Picture News” from the March/April issue of SA Yachting magazine in 1961.

‘Cariad I’, the 129-ton Durban-based ketch, is believed to have established a sailing craft record on February 14 when she arrived at the entrance to Delagoa Bay, off Lourenco Marques – 36 ½ hours after leaving Durban.

On the “Picture News” page is this reference: “This figurehead is a handsome addition to the joint clubhouse of the False Bay Yacht Club and the Marlin and Tuna Club at Simonstown. The lengthy picture-caption gives some history of the figurehead.

Is it still there? Hopefully an alter follower may have the answer?

Another piece of interest is this reference: “The first yacht of any consequence to be built by Louw and Halvorsen, in Cape Town, for many years is now being laid down for Colonel S. H. Jeffrey, of Constantia . It is a fine 50-ft. motor-sailer for tunny fishing and deep-sea voyaging.
