The 1994 BOC Around Alone Challenge will be remembered for the fact that Isabelle Autissier’s boat sank on leg 2, and she was rescued in dramatic fashion.
But early in the first leg she was flying, and a real threat for a top placing as she headed the fleet as reported by Dale Granger.
“South African JJ Provoyeur was still the meat in a French sandwich in the BOC Challenge singlehanded around the world yacht race yesterday but enjoyed some respite as flying Frenchwoman Isabelle Autissier slowed to 1,2 knots – her slowest speed of the race.
“At 14 58N and 041 21W Autissier, on ‘Ecureuil Poitou Charantes 2′, was also the slowest in the fleet as Provoyeur, on ‘Ben Vio’, led the chase of 19 men on her lead, sailing at four knots with 4 650 miles to the sanctuary of Table Bay.
“Provoyeur closed the gap to 152 miles and eased marginally ahead of third placed Jean Luc Van Den.”
