“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. “Baptism of Water” for Dalling

From the minutes and other paperwork I have from the STAR (Singlehanded Transatlantic Race) committee, a lot of discussion, and some heated, went into the decision for Bruce Dalling to either sail ‘Voortrekker’ to the start, or have it shipped.

Some felt that Dalling needed the time to acquaint himself with the boat, while others thought that he needed to relax and chill before the rigours of the Transatlantic Race.

The decision for him to sail to Plymouth, with two crew, was the best option as he really did get to trial ‘Voortrekker’ in a variety of conditions. This may well have played a crucial part in his success in the race.

At this juncture, the yacht had yet to be named, or launched.
