“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Backyard Crusade to Build ‘Saracen’

Saracen rolling down Adderley Street.

Here’s another delightful story about a self-build which I only came across having been intrigued by two photos I scanned into archives just a few days ago.

Gone are the days when on a whim someone would decide to build a yacht in his back garden, or garage in this case, have little more than sketches to work from, and ultimately cast a keel in concrete!! Today one has tons of bureaucracy to deal with, including SAMSA. Grrr!

Sadly too, home-builds are rare today. Which is a pity as our South African fleet was, in the early days, established with home-built projects.

There is just so much I love about this story that I won’t elaborate, but rather let you read it on your own.

The photos used today are originals from my archives. My best being the yacht travelling down Adderley Street in Cape Town on her way to being launched at the Royal Cape Yacht Club.
