“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. An Era Recalled

by Richard Crockett

This feature is sub-titled “Charles Paice remembers the J Boat saga … ”.

I remember Charles exceptionally well as he was a prolific writer on historical sailing matters, and passionate historian who loved nothing better than ‘talking yachts”. He was also a member of the well-loved and hard-working “A-team” at the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

His opening paragraph reads as follows: “Apple Macintosh took line honours in the South Atlantic Race and was the cynosure of all eyes. Representing that new class referred to as the “maxis”, this fine yacht, with the aid of all sorts of mechanical and electronic devices, computer programming and push-button navigation, is capable of thrilling performances. But one cannot help but recall with nostalgia another breed of maxis – the great racing schooners and cutters of an age leading up to the ultimate in competitive machines, the J-boats”.

It is a very interesting read with two beautiful pics of J-boats as a reminder of that bygone era.
