Earlier in the week I shared the report by Bob Fisher on the Jubilee Regatta, and today I will shared the preview of the event – not only because it gives a good overall history of the America’s Cup, but also because there are a few good pics too.

Fisher open his report as follows: “When, in 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, the schooner yacht ‘America’ arrived in Cowes and by her progress from Spithead had frightened the opposition to the point where it was difficult to obtain a match, a Royal Yacht Squadron Race around the Isle of Wight was to provide her with a chance to show her paces. No one could have had the slightest thought about what would arise, let alone that the prize she collected would become the most sought after trophy in sailing.

“The subsequent elevation of the Cup valued at 100 guineas to its present position as an icon in the sport has been wholly consequential on circumstances. After all, it lay around in a cupboard in Nathaniel Bloodgood’s (he was at the time the Secretary of the New York Yacht Club) house for several years before it was presented to the NYYC for international competition.

If you have an interest in the history of the America’s Cup, this is a good read.
