“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. All-woman Lipton Team From Yesteryear

The Lipton Cup has always piqued the interest of many different sailing types who have put campaigns together in an attempt to win that coveted trophy. Most have failed as only a handful can truly say they are winners.

One starkly clear fact is that a team of women have never won the cup – and that’s not for a lack of trying either.

Way back in 1988 an all-women team skippered by Judy Provoyeur, competed aboard a yacht named ‘French Connection’. Her crew were Linda Rabinowitz; Paula Stuart; Judie Williams and Lyn van der Merwe.

Staying with women, Angela Rennie was a yacht rigger, but sadly a broken back put paid to her antics up the mast, although during her recovery process she vowed to be back.

In a rare mistake the Zeekoevlei Yacht Club team “false started”in the 1994 race, plus they had a protest lodged against them in the same race.
