“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. Adventurous South African

by Richard Crockett

Every time I share a different newspaper cutting of Bruce Dalling, there is always new insight about the man who was selected to sail ‘Voortrekker’ in the singlehanded Transatlantic Race in 1968.

Today’s feature mentions some bizarre things about him, like the fact that “rumours are spreading fast about him in Cape Town where it is said that his rugged, handsome looks are irresistible to women”!

And this too: “Dalling, who drinks beer in the proper yachting tradition, and smokes enough to compete against the mythical Van Hunks, said to live in a in a cave on the slopes of Table Mountain, takes nothing seriously at this stage – except yachting.”

This is another insightful feature on Bruce Dalling, the man South Africans embraced and trusted to carry our hopes of winning the Singlehanded Transatlantic Race.

One question though, how does one drink beer in the proper yachting tradition?
