Few if any who competed in the Crystic Beachcomber Crossings from Mauritius to Durban in the ‘80s and ‘90s will ever forget them as the hospitality in Mauritius followed by a very tough race are memorable.
The planning and logistics for the race were equally challenging as some yachts were shipped from their home ports, while others sailed, and all needed their race supplies sourced “from home”.
The Daily News attempted to cover these aspects in today’s report, plus added three additional interesting reports.
“Shopping for supplies to last the 1590 nautical mile (2 800km) trip involves a great deal of careful planning on the part of the crew members.
“As the leading yachts will spend at least a week at sea – some of the smaller entries will spend between 10 and 14 days on the ocean – a tremendous amount of thought goes into just what gets stowed in the galley of a racing yacht.”
