Today I am happy to share another 9 editorials from 1985 and 1986 – all about the Optimist dinghy and the sailors of that era. There’s some fascinating stuff in these pages. Enjoy them.

PYC Nippers Win the Junior Nationals. Ian Statham won the Optimist nationals with Anthony Donkin taking the Dabchick national title in 1984. Both were from the Point Yacht Club. 4 pages of reports and pics.

Junior Nationals. Another report on this event with the top 10 results in the Optimist, Optimist Novice and Dabchick divisions.

Eastern Province Inter-Schools. Having started in 1977 with 27 Optimists, this year’s event had grown into a 110 boat and 160 scholar fleet. Most of the credit is due to Vaughan and Rhona Clark.

Optimists test their mettle in Algarrobo. For political reasons the Optimist worlds was off limits to South Africa so our top guys competed in the South American championships in Chile.

Junior National Regatta 1985. The nationals this year had smaller numbers with 51 Dabchicks and 78 Optimists, with Shaun Carkeek winning the Optimists and Greg Hall the Dabchicks.

1985 Swartvlei Junior Nationals. Numbers were down, ut the level of competition was tighter and more intense than ever before.

Masters Optimist Challenge. The conflict between the know-all parents/guardians and the young Oppie sailors is as old as the class itself.

Eastern Cape Junior Provincials. Western Province boosted numbers at this event in which Malcolm Hall won the Optimist ‘A” division and David Gale the Optimist “B” division.

US Optimist Nationals. Once again barred from participation in International competition, the South African squad competed in the Annapolis, USA.
