“Talking Sailing From My Archives. ‘83 Sea Harvest Race

1983 Sea Harvest Race.

by Richard Crockett

I was interested to discover that the inaugural Sea Harvest West Coast Race was first sailed in February 1980, and revived the old Royal Cape Yacht Club’s West Coast race which died out in the ’60s. And three years after the initial sponsorship. Sea Harvest again backed the 220 nautical mile race which attracted 32 entries.

The course was from Table Bay, round the Sea Harvest trawler ‘Taurus’, anchored 17 miles off Lambert’s Bay, round a mark just off-shore from Lambert ‘s Bay and finish in Saldanha Bay.

The last leg, round the tricky stretch of coast north of Saldanha to the finish, produced some significant position changes and the rounding order at Lambert’s Bay and finishing times make an interesting comparison.

Two Bonus reads are the Sprog Highveld Champs and a preview of the Laser Masters.
