Here’s something a little different as the Hobie class, by this stage in its life in South Africa, was turning heads and making waves country-wide.

The Smirnoff Classic was a fun team event which included sailing, pretty women and lots of Fun.

The 1977 Hobie Nationals were held in Algoa Bay, and Blaine Dodds, just 17 years old and still at school, took the Hobie 14 title, with P Collard taking the Hobie 16 title.

Yachtsman RSA Magazine broke the news first of the Hobie Worlds results where Blaine Dodds finished 4th overall and Mike Collier 10th.
