“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1994 Optimist Nationals + New Pics

by Richard Crockett

This report brings some new names to the party as Richard Booth and Paul Willcox, sons of prominent sailors and administrators David Booth and Rob & Ingrid Willcox, came into the reckoning at the top of the fleet on the Vaal Dam, with Aeolians as the venue.

Racing was tight from the “get-go” (how I hate this expression!) as is shown by this extract from the report: “Richard Booth led the first race, but on the run to the final mark sailed in to a hole which allowed the fleet to close up, and for Paul Willcox to take the lead. Willcox, with his local knowledge, sailed a good last beat covering Booth who in his attempt to break away from Willcox, allowed David Bartholomew to finish in second place”.

After five races there had been five different winners, proving just how close the racing was.
