Back in the day Rothmans Week was quite simply one of those compulsory regattas for anyone serious about ocean racing. It always attracted a big fleet, and always had a good top quality competitive fleet.
But what I did like about it was the fact that in those days it had a long distance race, PLUS a medium distance race too, as well as some round-the-cans races. So to be the champion one had to be good in all formats – especially when the distance races carried double points.
In 1989, that’s 36 years ago now, Rothmans arranged newspaper supplements in both the Cape Times and Daily News. Today I share both these 4-page supplements.
This is an extract of what the Cape Times said: “A leading British state-of-the-art yacht, the ‘Yeoman 27′, on which Prince Philip regularly sails, is in Cape Town to compete in the regatta.”
“Yeoman 27′ was expected to go head-to-head with Keith Bellamy’s ‘Club Mykonos’, the defending Rothmans Week champion, and ‘Thunderchild’.
