“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1983 Transvaal Dinghy Champs

by Richard Crockett

It’s almost 40 years ago that this event was sailed, yet some of the people whose names appear in the results are still around and sailing. This shows what a wonderful sport we have – a lifetime sport for those whose bones don’t creak too much!

What is interesting is that the event was held during the October long-weekend “at many different venues on the Highveld” – effectively a multi-class regatta despite the boats not being all at one venue.

The biggest class were the Lasers with 63 boats, and as the editorial states, some classes had “disappointingly small entries”.

A name that jumped off the page at me was that of G Amoils (George) no doubt, sailing a Mirror with C Walker (Clive??) – winning the class with just 3 points. Interestingly, just yesterday I scanned an image of George Amoils aboard Dave Hudson’s J 22 during a Crystic Week/J22 International offshore Durban.

There are many top names mentioned – so read the report to see who the “top dogs” were at the time.
