The Laser has always featured prominently in our magazine pages. I was interested to see the team South Africa sent to the 1980 Laser Worlds in Kingston, Canada, as it consisted of Stephan Kuhn, Ivan Gibbons, Chris King and Colin Dibb, with a further seven local sailors also able to compete.
Our top South African was Ivan Gibbons in 63rd place overall.
But what struck me on reading the interview with Stephan Kuhn was the quality of the fleet at the time in that people like Ed Baird and Cam Lewis, to name just two, were competing. Both have made names for themselves in the sport since then.
Kuhn gets into quite a lot of technical detail as to how the top guys were sailing Lasers then. I wonder whether the techniques of sailing a Laser are the same today?
