“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1976 Rothmans Week & Agulhas Race

by Richard Crockett

One of the advantages of having a newspaper rather than an A4 magazine was that pics could be printed much bigger than in a magazine. There’s a great spread of pics and a full set of race-by-race results in these reports today.

Rothmans Week was always such a grand affair as the sponsors brought some class and dignity to proceedings, and competitors wore jackets and ties to prize giving!

Rothmans Week was won by Bobby Bongers sailing ‘Impact’ with Ross Metcalfe, Richard Bertagh, Jeroem Bongers and John Robertson as crew.

David Abromowitz won the Agulhas Race sailing the Miura ‘Sundance Kid’. The report states that skipper David Abromowitz was backed by a crackerjack crew of Angelo Lavranos, Dave Hudson, Mike Bartholomew, JJ Provoyeur and Neal Gregory – all very fine yachties to this day.

Something I was not aware of was that Ted Kuttel of ‘Figaro’ was washed overboard during the Agulhas race and saved by his brother Padda who was on the helm and who gybed immediately while David Bongers whose instant action with the lifeline plucked him from the sea. Fine seamanship saved a man in distress.

There’s lots to read again today, and a fine selection of pics too.
