“Talking Sailing” From My Archives. 1968 505 Nationals

This newspaper pic of Dave Hudson and his brother Alan on Durban Bay showing impeccable style and doing everything right to make that 505 perform to its fullest.

While numbers in the 505 class were growing pretty smartly, there seemed to be negative undertones towards the class, especially when reading between the lines in the report on the 1968 Nationals on Saldanha Bay which was a multi-class event dubbed the “Olympics National”.

While very little was written on the 505s in this report, I share the full feature article as published in SA Yachting, and have highlighted all references to the 505 in yellow.

Dave Hudson won the event despite a retirement in the 4th race. Runner up was B Dutton with H Beck rounding off the podium. Sadly no crew are mentioned.

To show the magnitude of this “Olympics National” I have also shared the full set of results as published by SAYRA and inserted into the April issue of SA Yachting as a supplement. This is a full and comprehensive set of results for all classes competing in that event – and which makes fascinating reading due to all the names, many of whom are still involved in the sport today.

More 505 news tomorrow.
