On this list are the names of the sailors to compete, being Asenathi Jim and Roger Hudson (470 men) and Stefano Marcia (Laser men).
These three sailors have given their all in a bid to qualify and have now got the ‘green light’ so to speak.
Both teams are still in full preparation for Rio.
Roger Hudson and his helmsman Asenathi Jim provided this quick update:
Just back from Rio training trip # 1 (11-22 May), incorporating Rio 470 Coaches Regatta Act 1.
We were not at our best in the racing, reflected in the results with a best position of 8th, but we definitely achieved the main goal of the trip: learning as much as possible about the venue, the courses, the current, the wind and the general lay of the land in Rio.
We had Brevan in the coach-boat, and in addition we hired a Brazilian ex-Olympic 470 sailor Fabio Pillar as a consultant coach to advise us on all aspects of local conditions, which was expensive, but most valuable.
Rio is not an easy place to sail, nor to spend time generally. But we are much smarter on the topic now than we were 2 weeks ago and we have a good foundation now from which to learn more on the next 2 trips.
Our next trips to Rio will be for Act 2 (21-28 June) and Act 3 (8-19 July). Then most likely around July 29th we will head back to Rio for the Olympics. Our racing dates at the Olympics are 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 August. The Opening Ceremony is on the 5th and the Closing Ceremony on the 21st.
