Round’s 1 & 2 of the MDM All-comers series was held this past weekend. The moderate southerly wind made conditions ideal for pursuit racing
The fleet was split into two classes senior and junior. The seniors first race (in a mildly freshening 10 to 15 knot breeze) was dominated by the three 470’s who took out a whopping 9 minutes on the three Lasers and lone Sonnet beating them by 3 minutes over the line. The 470assault was lead by Olympians Asenathi Jim and Roger Hudson. The Lasers were off first, then the Sonnet (first time Sonnet’s have to give the Lasers time!) and last the 470’s. The first 470 finished the 5.7nm course in a speedy 42min, they were closely followed by Sacha Pelisson and crew Alex Burger and then Ed Lehtinen and crew Josh Rubenstein. In the junior class all three Optimists finished very close to each other, Kai Leslie finished 8 seconds ahead of Sarah Deary who finished 11 seconds ahead of Andrew van Niekerk.
In the second race the wind eased significantly to around 8/9 knots. Three 29’ers and a Finn, who lost his way during the race, joined in on the action. All three 29’ers finished ahead of the rest, this time Taariq Jacobs and Neil Malan showed the entire fleet their transom (in fact the fleet lost sight of the transom over the horizon). They beat the next 29’er by 3 minutes and the first Laser by 6 minutes – that after starting 9 minutes after the Lasers. This time the 470’s did not have it all their way and the Lasers of Alistair Keytel and Pete Wilson narrowly edged out the 470 crew of Asenathi and Roger – who are the yellow jersey holders for round’s 3 & 4.
Once again Kai Leslie just defeated Sarah Deary – this time by only 3 seconds.
The next two rounds (round 3 & 4) will be on Sunday 16th February. Once again the racing will be a pursuit – this time an individual handicap, based on the performance in round’s 1 & 2. If you did not participate you take the class handicap. The detailed results, handicaps and starting order for rounds 3 & 4 will be posted on this website and the club notice board. The ‘jerseys’ for the first 5 positions will be presented before the start of round 3.
