At just 22 years young Mikhayla has already crammed so much sailing into her life, and done so much to support and administer the sport at all levels.
She is a Commerce Student and a staunch member of the UCT Yacht Club, committee member, organiser and planner of numerous successful sailing campaigns.
She was the bow-person on the UCTYC Lipton Cup entry last year. She is also a regular member of the Nitro crew, being active on the bow. She organises regular development and learn-to-sail events for UCTYC at their home base at Zeekoevlei for non-sailors and beginners. She has organised two of the annual Inter Varsity regattas, and managed two successful Lipton Cup challenges for UCT.
It was her inspiration, coupled with the promotional sailing video which showcased the sport of sailing, which resulted in UCTYC being the Sports Club of the Year in 2016.
The recent UCTYC entry into the Cape 2 Rio Race is certainly a highlight of her sailing career as she played a major role in this entry. She was described as the glue in the campaign that has held everything and everyone together’ as she handled media, sponsors and more to see this campaign to fruition – and a stunning result of first in IRC Class 2 in Rio.
Mikhayla has volunteered her ‘extra’ time to Mike Horn’s campaign to monitor sharks, teach young children and manage the logistics of his global campaign that travels by yacht from continent to continent. She will project manage Mike Horn’s campaign when she returns from Rio de Janeiro.
This is a remarkable lady who is passionate about every aspect of sailing and who simply goes out there and enjoys our sport to its fullest.
