Lipton Cup – An Earnest Appeal for Historical Material

The South African Navy honoured the Lipton Cup series off Durban this year with the fine, up-to-the-minute frigate SAS President Kruger, Captain G. N. Green, as guardship. Here the fleet sets off for the first mark, on one of the light-weather days.

I am currently researching and writing the complete history of the Lipton Cup from 1911 to the present day.

Although my personal archives are extensive, there are gaps which I am battling to fill, especially in the founding era from 1911 to 1923, and again in the 30-Square Metre era from 1952 to 1973.

If anyone out there has any historic Lipton Cup material to share with me, please make contact (editor@sailing.co.za).

I am looking for results (race by race and overall), newspaper cuttings, feature articles, the official brochures, and simply anything, even photographs, from those periods.

However, anything anyone may have on the Lipton Cup, from whatever period will be useful and appreciated.

So, please dig deep and don’t let the history of our wonderful sport be lost!
