Local sailor Jof Heathcote who is currently working in London is competing in his second UK Moth Champs – and has started off his campaign with a 9th overall out of 59 boats.

Blazing sunshine and a 10 knot South Easterly greeted the 59 boat Moth Nationals fleet at Stokes Bay Sailing Club. Just one race was sailed as the second was canned after two breeze directions fighting each other frustrated the wind resulting in the cancellation.

“I got away cleanly in race 1, in the front few, but was locked out and forced quite far left. The right was paying a lot so was probably down around 16 or so at the first top mark. I made some good gains downwind, but then stupidly managed to get myself held out left again on the upwind leg. Had a bit of a go at the two in front of me on the last run, but just couldn’t quite make it stick, so finished up with a 9. I’m happy enough with that.

Hopefully a bit more breeze on tomorrow (Friday)” said Heathcote.
