Holiday 23 ‘Fun’ Worlds

by JC Knobel

With Easter now here the H23 class members are looking forward to relaxing with family and friends while competing in the biannual Holiday 23 Worlds which take place in the surroundings of St Helena Bay, and which are hosted by Port Owen Yacht Club – home of the Holiday 23 Worlds. And with Charlie’s Brewery on board as sponsor it should ‘froth’ with excitement and close contests.

The programme will consist of a welcome braai on Thursday evening, round-the-cans racing on Friday, a medium distance race(s) on Saturday with a overnight stop at an anchorage, and a medium distance race on Sunday back to Port Owen. This Sunday race will be followed by a sit-down dinner at Charlie’s Brewhouse, with prize giving on Monday.

The Holiday 23 as a class thrives on combining sailing with a vibrant social side. The sailing is always close as this Angelo Lavranos designed one-design lends itself equally to racing and cruising. Although only 7 metres in length overall, the H23 is surprisingly roomy down below and is perfect for weekend getaways. It can sleep up to 5 people comfortably, is designed with a lifting keel and rudder which makes it easy trailable, very seaworthy with great light to moderate wind performance, and safe to take into shallow waters.
