Now here’s a real blast from the past for those who used to sail Spearheads. By now there can only be a smattering of them left on our local waters, with a guess being that most can now be found on inland waters.
While archiving two huge boxes of Voortrekker archive material I came across mention of a trophy for Spearheads made from a sheet lead block from Voortrekker. Then yesterday I found this A3 poster – which I think is from either 1968 or 1969, possibly later.
To me the big question is whether this trophy still exists, and if so where it is as it would be cool to be able to get a photograph of it.
There are many old sailing trophies that have gone missing over time as they have been taken home by those who won them and never returned, or ‘stored’ in dark corners of yacht clubs as no-one knows what to do with them.
I feel that it’s time these old trophies were resurrected, put back in circulation, or simply given up to someone responsible to ensure that they do not end up in auction houses, antique shops or even on the rubbish dump.
If you agree, or if you know the whereabouts of this trophy, or any others that lie forgotten, please let me know so that all sailors can enjoy them and their history.
