Finn Class – Archive Pics part 2

John Sully took to Finns for the week and is seen here in Nick Hancock’s Maarse Finn named ‘Fillibuster’.
A start of the Finns. L-R. Johan Louter in ‘Fox II’; James McCall in ‘Para Finn’; Peter Collins in ‘Faux Pas’; Peter Cardwell in ‘Fezant’ and Bob Nuttall in ‘Finomenal’.
Before the start of the first race. Flags gaily decorate the Club and Hans Fogh starts putting his sweaters on!
The start of the third race. Hans Fogh (D 1) is in the lead.
Mrs. F van Rooyen, one of two women skipers rounds up on No. 1 mark.
Crowding at the mark are H van der Wal, J Lindeman and Ann Wellbeloved during the Finn Highveld champs at VLC.
There is no caption to this – although it could well be a very young Ernie Shaw? Any thoughts?
Gordon Burn-Wood in ‘Finito’.
SAS Have an annual award named after him.
All this nonsense about plastic or wooden, American, Dutch, Swedish or South African hulls! Johan Louter has solved his problems – he sails without a hull! – and just outside the shark nets off Durban beaches.
Pre-Olympic Selection. Johan Louter takes his Finn ‘Fox II’ to sea during the Lipton Cup. The Port Captain gave him special permission to go out and get some practice in the open seas because there were numerous craft on hand should he have found himself in difficulty.

I was hoping for far more response from Finn sailors – both old and new – to the pics posted earlier this week!

Hopefully they may all have time this weekend to digest them and submit feedback?

With the Finn nationals due to kick off very soon and

the Class boasting an expected entry of 30 boats, I have raided my archives and found some really interesting old Finn pics.

So all you FINN-atics out there, please put your heads together and see if you can fill in the gaps, or add additional info, to what I have provided from what is on the pics. Additional info, anecdotes about those in the pics and more would be appreciated.

I urge you all to be proactive and enjoy the exercise as I have at least ten pics a day ready to roll over the next few days. No feedback – no more pics!

Keep scrolling to the end as there are 10 pics to enjoy – and more to come after this batch.

Send the info to: editor@sailing.co.za – or be interactive on the SAILING Facebook page and post your thoughts, comments and anecdotes there.
