African Optimist Champs – Kavanagh Fighting for the Podium

Day 2 was a challenging day for the competitors and the Race Committee as a rainy depression opened the day and did not lift until late in the afternoon. Masterfully managed by the IODA Principal Race Officer, Ilker Bayindir, two races were finally achieved, with the first starting at around 15h00 when the breeze started to fill.

RSA sailor Sean Kavanagh, one of the youngest in the fleet, ended the day with a 6 & 4 to put him 4th overall, and in with a fighting chance of making the podium.

Rohan Chidley finished with a 7 and 5 to shoot him up the overall standings into 11th spot, and also with a fighting chance of a top 10 finish.

Today is team racing morrow will be the Team Racing Day. The RSA team made the cut and faced of against Seychelles – and won their first contest.
