A highlight in any Class’s sailing calendar is a “world championship” and in 2014 South Africa can certainly stand proud regarding these events.

The last J22 World Championships were held in 2007 in Durban and succeeded in putting South Africa on the map in the J class for good organisation, competitive, well administered sailing, great conditions and, as always, friendly SA people. The interest this year has shown that 2007 has not been forgotten.

With 3 SA teams participating in the 2013 Worlds in Rhode Island to promote our worlds (as well as sail), several international competitors have given their commitment. Entries from USA, Cayman Islands, Germany and Australia are all in the pipeline with the highlight being the attendance of the 2013 World Champion and his crew.

The International Jury representatives come from the USA and UK with the additional members being made up of international accredited judges from South Africa. All have committed with travel and accommodation arrangements confirmed. The offers of help from technically skilled personnel to assist with the running of the regatta has been overwhelming, so we will be assured of a top class regatta under control of the Race Officer Dave Rushton.

The small town of Denysville will have an awakening when the estimated 200-plus, sailing fraternity alone, arrive. Manten Marina will be the site of the Regatta Centre with both DAC and LDYC being an integral part of entertainment, accommodation and food requirements. Those offering accommodation are filling fast as people realise there are only 84 days to count down.

Information regarding entry forms, NOR, accommodation and all those other necessary elements of a successful regatta are being added to the website as confirmed.

Regular mail shots are being sent to the data base but if you want to be added please let us know. sharinr@mweb.co.za
