A week ago I published a few old Sprog pics and a ‘GORPS Guzzle’ certificate. Those pics and the certificate have brought many people out of the woodwork to comment and reminisce.
My old mate John Wright has now updated me with info on the ‘GORPS Guzzle’, as well as supplying a list of all winners of the Sprog Nationals – which reads like a Who’s Who of top sailors in the country.
The word GORPS , as you most probably know, is Sprog spelt backwards.
The deed of gift for the ‘GORPS Guzzle’ can be read HERE: Gorps Guzzle Deed of Gift
The list of Sprog Nationals winners can be seen HERE: Sprog Nationals Champions Updated by JVW
Traditionally the ‘GORPS Guzzle’ trophy was awarded to the boat, not the helm. If a boat won it more than once a star was engraved against the original engraved boat names, so on the list the numbers indicate the additional wins.
Also attached is another certificate that ‘Slap Happy’ won in 1976. The GORPS Trophy is the picture on the certificate and not the Transvaal Trophy as Andrew De Vlieg had said in his reaction to the Facebook post.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this bit of interest grew into some enthusiasm to revive the class” said John Wright.
That it most certainly would!
Here is a the list of ‘GORPS Guzzle’ winners (in alpha order):
